Sofitel Fes Palais Jamai

5 Star

An upmarket landmark property located in a less frequented part of the old city, just outside the ancient medina walls. There is a little around in the way of tourist sights but these can be easily reached by taxi or, for the more energetic, through the narrow, sometimes hilly streets.

This elegant, well designed choice has a distinctive Moroccan/French atmosphere and attracts international travellers many of whom use the property’s conference facilities. Views from the rear are exceptional and a photographer’s dream.

Exterior

A beige, fortress-like building with a grand arched drive-up entrance with high security in place. Lush vegetation and colourful flags flank the entrance. The long, rectangular accommodation building is accompanied by a smaller blocks staged down the side of a gentle slope. Many rooms have a balcony with some enjoying views over the ancient city with its mosques and irregular rooftops.

Property type: Hotel

Balcony/Terrace: Some rooms

Storeys: 7

Built Year: 1930

Interior

Interior decor is both tasteful and ornate with a large airy lobby providing a warm, upmarket welcome. A business like atmosphere prevails in the reception area, typical of the chain.

Well groomed staff ensure attention to detail and a quality-driven atmosphere. Stairs lead down to a lower level with a congenial wood panelled bar and a small, intimate Moroccan style restaurant has bright red furnishings and low tables. Main restaurant is more conventional with its pool facing terrace and pristine table linens.

Rooms: 142

Grounds

There are many steps in the grounds which feature a sizeable pool area with a wide surround accommodating an adequate but not excessive supply of sunloungers. Lemon trees and palms provide shade to intimate paths and a roof terrace provides scenic views across the medina in one direction and the pool in the other.

Location

Area Type: Located just outside the old city walls, on raised ground 100m from Bab Guissa to the N of the medina. The walk from the property to the main sights is through a typically Moroccan setting with little in the way of tourist amenities. Bab Boujloud, with its host of restaurants and shops is 800m away to the S and the souks of the central medina area are 400m away, through narrow streets and alleyways. Taxis wait outside the entrance and there are a couple of tourist shops outside the property’s entrance.
